Named after the coin that Frances Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy used to decide Portland's name in 1845, Portland Penny Diner investigates the collision of Pacific Northwest immigrant food cultures and the Native American's pure approach to food. The “diner" concept was the original food cart of the late 1800's, dubbed “the lunch wagon." Portland Penny Diner is the rightful child of that bygone era, wed with Portland's free spirit that brings people in out of the rain.

Portland Penny Diner is a counter service diner featuring relaxed seating and grab and go options. The day begins with breakfast, where fresh made morning pastries will include Reuben Croissants, Today's Quickbreads (banana, apple) and Toaster Tarts. Portland Penny Diner features a new generation of breakfast sandwiches that can be enjoyed at a table or wrapped and ready to go.

Please note, this is a sample menu as our menu changes daily.

Portland Penny Diner is ready for the nightlife. After three years as a downtown breakfast and lunchtime staple, Chef Vitaly Paley’s casual spot is poised to become the next happy hour hot spot, remodeled with cozy red naugahyde banquets, additional tables, updated decor and 8 draught cocktail taps—more than any other bar in city. The updates usher in the restaurant’s evening hours, beginning with a new happy hour menu and housemade craft cocktails that will flow into the night. Lead Barman Tony Gurdian’s designed a lineup of vintage and classic Pennydraft tap cocktails for the bar, a menu of “Short Orders” (plated shots with pairings), and a Daily Punch. The bar will also host two wine and four draught beer taps.

The new menu is a dream mash up of comfort and street food, a collaboration between Paley and Executive Chef Doug Adams. Paley has been looking for the right venue in which to serve his original Fry Bread Tacos since opening Imperial. They’re front and center on the redesigned menu, beginning with three: House Smoked Pastrami, Soy Braised Pork Belly, and Hangtown Fry. Diners will find other crave worthy items like Doug’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Blackened Trout, soups, salads, fries, and a menu of signature burgers like the Jalapeno Popper Burger. Portland Penny Diner will continue to serve espresso and the quick grab-and-go breakfast sandwiches they've become known for.
