Chive and Avocado Dip Recipe

Yields: About 2 cups
Prep time: 10 minutes

  • 2 ripe avocados (Choose soft, even-colored fruit)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives
  • 1/2 cup sour cream OR plain Greek yogurt (Use yogurt for a thicker, slightly tangier dip)
  • Juice of 1 lemon (or lime)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (or 1 small clove, minced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Flavor Boosters:

  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin (adds a warm, earthy note)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (for a little kick)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (if you enjoy the flavor)

  • Prep the avocados: Halve the avocados lengthwise, remove pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
  • Mash: Using a fork, mash the avocados. You can keep it a bit chunky or make it completely smooth – that’s up to you!
  • Mix in the flavor: Add the chopped chives, sour cream (or Greek yogurt), lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined.
  • Taste and adjust: Give your dip a taste. Add more lemon juice, salt, pepper, or any of the optional spices as needed.
  • Cover and chill: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Serve! Before serving, give the dip another stir. This dip is delicious with:

  • Tortilla chips
  • Crackers
  • Sliced raw vegetables (carrots, bell peppers, celery, cucumbers)
  • A spread for sandwiches or burgers

  • Choose avocados carefully: For the best consistency and flavor, use avocados that are ripe, but not overly soft. They should yield to gentle pressure.
  • Make it ahead: You can make this dip a few hours in advance and keep it refrigerated, covered.
  • Prevent oxidization: A squeeze of lemon juice helps keep the avocado from browning, but if storing for a while, place a sheet of plastic wrap directly on the dip’s surface before adding the main cover.
