Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe

Yields: 1 sandwich
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 6-8 minutes

  • 2 slices of your favorite bread (white, sourdough, whole wheat, etc.)
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, provolone, or a mix)
  • Optional: Pinch of salt and pepper

  • Choose your cheese: For the perfect melt, grate your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheeses often have additives that make melting less smooth.
  • Get your skillet ready: Heat a nonstick skillet or cast iron pan over medium-low heat.
  • Butter the bread: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. This is key to golden-brown, crispy perfection.
  • Assemble the sandwich: Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in the heated skillet. Top with your desired amount of cheese. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing out.
  • Grill time: Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You may need to gently press the sandwich with a spatula to help it cook evenly.
  • Slice and enjoy: Cut your grilled cheese in half diagonally and enjoy the warm, gooey goodness!

  • Low and slow wins the race: Medium-low heat ensures the bread gets crispy before the cheese burns.
  • Cover it up: For extra melty cheese, cover the pan with a lid for a minute or two while cooking.
  • Play with flavors: Add a kick with a few thin slices of fresh jalapeño, layer in some sliced tomato, or drizzle on a bit of honey for a sweet and savory twist.

Fancy Variations:

  • Gourmet Blend: Mix sharp cheddar with Gruyère or Fontina cheese for an elevated flavor.
  • The Italian: Use mozzarella, provolone, a smear of pesto, and a sprinkle of Italian seasoning.
  • Caprese-Inspired: Layer mozzarella, fresh basil leaves, and balsamic glaze.
