IHOP Belgian Waffles Recipe

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, separated
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (buttermilk is ideal, but regular milk works)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Belgian waffle iron

  • Prep your waffle iron: Preheat your Belgian waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly spray the grids with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  • Combine dry ingredients: In the large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Separate and beat eggs: In the medium mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks. In a separate, clean bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  • Combine wet ingredients: Add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract to the bowl with the egg yolks. Whisk until well combined.
  • Create the batter: Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, being careful not to overmix. Some small lumps are okay.
  • Fold in egg whites: Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter until just incorporated.
  • Cook those waffles: Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron according to your waffle iron’s instructions. Cook until golden brown, usually about 3-5 minutes. The exact time depends on your specific waffle iron model.
  • Serve and enjoy: Serve immediately with your favorite toppings like butter, syrup, fruit, whipped cream, or anything you crave!

  • Buttermilk is best: If possible, use buttermilk for the best flavor and a lighter texture.
  • Don’t overmix!: Overmixing the batter can lead to tough waffles. Gently fold until the ingredients are just combined.
  • Waffle iron variations: Cooking times and precise amounts of batter may vary based on your waffle iron. Pay attention to visual cues and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Top it off: Get creative with toppings! Chopped nuts, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, chocolate chips, or fresh berries bring exciting flavors.
