Italian Sausage and Peppers Cheeseburgers – Gluten Free Dinner Recipe

  • 1 pound gluten-free sweet or hot Italian sausage (homemade or store-bought)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (any color), sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or your favorite melty cheese)

For Serving:

  • 4 gluten-free hamburger buns
  • Optional: Ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.

Cook the Sausage:

  • Remove sausage from casings, if necessary. Shape into four equal-sized patties.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and nicely browned.
  • In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of provolone cheese, cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt.

Sauté the Veggies:

  • While the sausage cooks, heat the olive oil in a separate skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook the vegetables, stirring occasionally, until softened and slightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.

Assemble the Burgers:

  • Place a cooked sausage patty on the bottom half of each gluten-free bun.
  • Top with the sautéed peppers and onions.
  • Add any desired condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc).
  • Place the top bun on, and enjoy your delicious burger!

Gluten-Free Notes:

  • Sausage: Choose a brand labeled gluten-free or make your own. Many store-bought Italian sausage brands contain gluten fillers.
  • Buns: Many stores carry gluten-free hamburger buns in the bread aisle or freezer section.
  • Cheese: Most cheeses are naturally gluten-free. Double-check the label if unsure.
  • Condiments: Watch out for hidden gluten in condiments. Opt for brands with “gluten-free” labeling.

  • Spice it up: Use hot Italian sausage if you like your burgers with a kick.
  • Make Your Own Sausage: For the freshest flavor, try making your own Italian sausage seasoning mix! You’ll find many recipes online.
  • Toppings Galore: Get creative – add roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, marinara sauce, or any of your favorite burger toppings.

Enjoy your Italian Sausage and Peppers Cheeseburgers!
