Oven Baked Beans with Bacon Recipe

  • 1 pound bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 2 (28-ounce) cans baked beans (or use your favorite type of canned beans)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Cook the bacon: Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  • Sauté the vegetables: Leave some bacon grease in the skillet, then add the diced onion and bell pepper (if using). Cook over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked bacon, sautéed vegetables, baked beans, ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, apple cider vinegar, mustard, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  • Bake: Transfer the bean mixture to a 9×13 inch baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the beans are heated through and bubbling.
  • Rest and serve: Let the baked beans rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.

Tips & Variations

  • Spice it up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a touch of heat.
  • More smokiness: Use smoked paprika instead of regular black pepper.
  • Different beans: Experiment with pinto beans, navy beans, or a mix!
  • Vegetarian: Omit the bacon and use a little olive oil to saute your veggies. Smoked paprika will add a savory depth to replace the bacon.
  • Make it ahead: You can assemble this dish the day before and store it in the refrigerator. Add a little extra baking time when cooking from cold.

Enjoy your hot and flavorful baked beans!
